Chapter 18 · Measure

The monthly maintenance routine

Time
Fifteen minutes a week; two hours a month
You need
Everything the earlier chapters produced
Output
A dated monthly record of what was checked, what was done, and what the measurements showed

In one paragraph

Profiles decay when neglected: reviews go unanswered, hours go stale, a suggested edit is accepted, a listing drifts, a plugin breaks the sitemap. The routine is a quarter of an hour a week on the profile and two hours a month on everything else, ending with a written record of what was done, so that the measurements in the previous two chapters can be read against it.

Why a routine

Everything in the earlier chapters is a state, and states decay. A review arrives and sits unanswered. A stranger answers a question in the questions section. Google accepts a suggested change to the hours or the category. A directory updates its format and drops the phone number. A platform update breaks the sitemap. A competitor opens nearby and the pack shifts. None of this announces itself. The routine is how it gets noticed within a week or a month rather than a year.

Weekly, fifteen minutes

Open the profile. Answer every new review, as the reviews chapter describes. Answer any new question. Check for Google-suggested edits to the profile and accept or reject them; unreviewed suggestions can be applied automatically. Publish a post if there is something to say. Glance at the performance figures for anything odd. Same day each week.

Monthly, two hours

Listings. Open the spreadsheet from the NAP chapter. Spot-check a handful of listings for drift. Mark any pending corrections that have gone through.

Technical. Open Search Console. Read the indexing report for new errors, the enhancements reports for structured data problems, and the performance report for the month's clicks and impressions. Fix what is small; list what is not.

Visibility. Run the grid from the measurement chapter, same queries, same points. Record it.

Outcomes. Fill the monthly line from the tracking chapter: profile figures, site figures, bookings, sources.

Links. Update the sheet from the links chapter: asks made, links earned, links lost. Make one new ask.

One improvement. Pick one thing from the technical list, the pages, or the profile, and do it. One a month, compounding, is how a site gets good.

The record. Write down, dated, what was checked, what was done, and what the two measurements showed. This is the document that lets a change in visibility or outcomes be connected to a cause, and it is what a business hands to an SEO company on day one if it hires one.

Quarterly and yearly

Quarterly: reread the baseline and decide whether the target queries and area still fit the business. Yearly: photographs refreshed, the description reread, the service pages reread for prices and details that have changed, special hours set for the year's holidays.

Illustrative example. A cleaning company's routine is Monday mornings for the profile and the first Friday of the month for everything else. Its monthly record after a year is twelve pages, and it can say which month it added district pages and what the grid did in the following two. That describes a habit, not a result.

Output

The monthly record, dated, accumulating. That completes the method. The last chapter is about the alternative: hiring it done.
