Local SEO in Dublin: what it is and what it involves

What it means

Local SEO is search engine optimisation for a business that serves people in a place. A national retailer wants to be found by anyone; a Dublin dentist wants to be found by someone in Dublin 4 who needs a dentist this week. The mechanics differ because Google answers those two searches differently: the second gets a map with three businesses on it, and getting into that map is a different job from ranking a page.

Google states that local ranking rests on three things: relevance, how well a business matches what was searched; distance, how far it is from the searcher or the area searched; and prominence, how well known it is. Everything in this handbook is an attempt to improve one of those three by legitimate means.

The four parts

The Google Business Profile. The listing that puts a business on the map. Claimed, verified, categorised, completed and maintained. Chapters 03 to 08.

Listings elsewhere. The name, address and telephone number as they appear on every other site that mentions the business. When they disagree, the business is harder to identify. Chapters 09 and 10.

The website. Pages that say where the business is and what it does, marked up so a machine can read it, and fast enough to be usable. Chapters 11 to 15.

Measurement. Position in the map across the area rather than at one point, and the calls and enquiries that follow. Chapters 16 to 18.

What it is searched for

The phrase itself has a family, and the plural forms are the largest. These are Ahrefs estimates for Ireland, retrieved 9 September 2026, and they are estimates rather than counts.

The pattern is worth noticing before you hire anyone. Most of the demand is for a supplier, not for the subject: people search for a local SEO company far more often than they search for local SEO. That is the market this handbook exists to make legible, and the last chapter is about deciding whether to enter it.

What it is not

It is not the same as ranking a page in the ordinary results, which is covered by search engine optimisation more broadly. It is not advertising: a paid result is bought, a map position is earned. It is not a one-off job, because profiles decay, listings drift and competitors move. And it is not a guarantee. Every chapter here says what it can and cannot promise.

Where to start

If nothing has been done yet, start at chapter 02 and record a baseline before changing anything. If the profile exists but was never finished, start at chapter 06. If everything is done and nothing is happening, go to chapter 16 and check that you are measuring the right thing.
